September 13 and 14, 2002

Virginia City is one cool town! We were lucky enough to visit this relic right out of the Old WEst twice! On September 13th we visited the students at the elementary school in Virginia City (Hugh Gallagher Elementary School)and I must say that as I saddled up, I felt as if I might be riding right into the past. With old, warped wooden sidewalks, false fronted stores and many saloons, the main street is very much as it must have been a hundred years or more ago.

Students, teachers, the local paper, and Carson City's newspaper all met us with a warm welcome and we made the front page of the paper the following morning,

a fact we discovered at the Reno airport when we were dropping Dani off at the airport for her flight home! I suspect the front page article is part of the reason why the signing on Saturday morning was such a success.

Not only did a couple of long-time Pony Express riders show up (both Dale and Bonnie Ryan popped by the MArk Twain book store in their red shirts and yellow neckerchiefs...) but one child even brought in his pet ferret!

After the signing, we took a little time to explore the shops and then headed down the scenic Six Mile Canyon road in search of wild mustangs. Alas, the band Dani and I had spotted on the outskirts of town on Friday were nowhere to be seen when crew members Jan and Jane went looking for them.

On our way back to the Royer Ranch near Dayton we stopped to take a couple of photographs in the picturesque Six Mile Canyon...
